New Joe Guesthouse, Khao San Road, Bangkok
81 Chakrabongse Rd,
Khwaeng Talat Yot, Khet Phra Nakhon,
There are many, over a hundred hotels in the famous backpacker locale of Khao San Rd. These range from inexpensive dorm room hostels at 200 baht a night ($7) to 3 stars, 2,000 baht ($80) classy hotels. The latter usually include a buffet breakfast and all the trimmings. In between are lots of moderately priced alternatives. These offer a small room, a comfortable bed, aircon, and private facilities. One of these is the New Joe Guesthouse.
The New Joe is not on the actual Khao San Rd, but down an alley, off Khao San. This makes it cheaper, quieter, but just a little tricky to find for a first-time visitor, however, it is an attractive place to make camp.
Clean Rooms in Khao San Road
The rooms are clean, with all the amenities. There is a laundry service, travel advice and ticketing to your next destination, and reception is open 24-hours a day. Also, the staff are friendly, helpful, and fun to talk to. You will find that the Thai staff on Khao San tend to be younger folk from all over Thailand who come to the Big Mango (Bangkok) to make money and see the world.
There is a choice of rooms, from a dorm room (good for a group) at 250 baht a night ($8), a fan room at 400 baht ($13), to more comfortable and larger 500 and 600 baht rooms. Discounts for a longer stay (negotiation), and discounts with online booking services (e.g. hostelworld.com). You can stay here for a while and not break the bank.
In addition to your room, there is a pleasantly stocked bar, with a humorous ladyboy bartender, a pool table equipped courtyard restaurant with inexpensive and tasty western and Thai meals, and a small business centre, a place to work for when you have business to transact: printing, scanning, and so forth. New Joe does have safety deposit boxes, but at reception, not in your room. Use them. Public areas are monitored by cameras. To top this off, an in-house massage service!
As an additional inducement to stay, for every day of residence you receive a free drink from the bar! Of interest to some, a two-hour beet buffet. All the beer you can drink for 300 baht!
Guests tend to be younger travellers from all over, who spend a few days, a week seeing the nearby sights of Bangkok, and experiencing life in Khao San. Friendly folk.
To sum it up, the Guesthouse is clean, tidy, and well organised, but it is also a little worn, a little scarred, the wifi is free, but slow, most of the (tiny) balconies look out over roofs or onto brick walls. It is what it is.
There are many $15 a night hotels like this in Khao San. Not posh, but comfortable. If you are looking for such a room New Joe is always a good choice.
